Freedive Crete provides personal coaching in freediving, in-water safety, spearfishing technique, dive-site selection, buddy and pair management, and condition assessment. We do not catch fish for you and we do not run fishing trips. Any fish you choose to take is your own recreational activity, carried out under your own recreational fishing license and responsibility.

Conditions and Choosing the Spot
On the south coast the sea decides where we fish, not the other way round. Before every session we read the wind, the swell and the water, then choose a spot that is safe for your level and worth the dive.
Reef, seagrass and drop-offs
The coast around Plakias is mostly rocky reef, with seagrass meadows on sand and steep drop-offs off the headlands. Each holds different fish at different depths, and learning to read those edges is a big part of what we coach.
The wind picks the side
Wind is the deciding factor here. When it blows from one direction, the far side of a headland is often calm and clear while the near side is choppy. We pick the sheltered side on the day and move if conditions change.
Visibility and current
Visibility is usually good, but swell and wind can stir up the shallows and create surface current. We would rather dive a less famous spot in clear, calm water than a better-looking one in poor conditions.
Summer traffic
In July and August the beaches fill with swimmers and small boats. We keep well away from both, use the surface buoy every dive, and often go out early before the bays get busy.
Spearfishing Regulations in Greece
Spearfishing in Greece is legal and regulated: on breath-hold only, in daylight, and away from swimmers and protected areas. These are the essentials we brief every guest on before we head out. Rules change and local restrictions apply, so check the current rules with the local port authority before you fish.
Documents
- Valid ID or passport
- Your own recreational fishing license, issued online through the Ministry of Rural Development and Food
- Minimum age: 16 years
Rules
- Breath-hold only - spearfishing on scuba or with any breathing apparatus is prohibited
- Daylight only, from sunrise to sunset - night spearfishing is prohibited
- Tow a clearly visible surface buoy to mark your position while you dive
- Stay at least 200m from swimmers, flagged beaches, nets and moored boats
- Load and carry the speargun only in the water, never on the beach or the boat
- Fish weighing under 150 g may not be taken with a speargun
- The catch is for personal consumption and can never be sold
- Protected species, marine protected areas and marked no-fishing zones are off limits
- Ports, harbours and their entrances are off limits
