- Do I need experience to try spearfishing?
- No prior spearfishing experience is required for beginner sessions in Plakias. You should be comfortable swimming and holding your breath for 30-60 seconds. Freedive Crete provides complete instruction covering speargun safety, fish identification, and sustainable hunting techniques. We recommend basic freediving skills (Wave 1 or equivalent) for better results.
- Is a fishing license required for spearfishing in Crete?
- Yes, all spearfishers in Greek waters must hold a valid recreational fishing license. Freedive Crete handles all permit arrangements as part of our spearfishing packages. The license costs approximately EUR 30 annually and requires a valid passport. We assist with online registration 1-2 weeks before your session.
- What fish can I catch while spearfishing in Crete?
- Southern Crete's waters host Mediterranean species including dentex, sea bream (sargos, tsipoura), grouper (rofos), amberjack (magiatiko), and octopus. Summer months (June-September) offer the best variety. Minimum size limits apply: 24cm for sea bream, 45cm for grouper, 60cm for amberjack. We follow sustainable practices and avoid protected species.
- What equipment is provided for spearfishing trips?
- Freedive Crete provides professional spearfishing equipment including pneumatic or band spearguns (75-90cm), low-volume masks, long-blade fins, 5mm wetsuits, weight belts, floatlines, buoys, and catch bags. All spearguns are serviced before each season. You only need to bring swimwear and towel.
- Can I do deeper spearfishing dives by boat?
- Yes. For divers with the right level and conditions, we offer boat-based sessions with deeper options up to 50 meters. This requires advance planning, weather checks, and instructor approval for safety.
